A trained technician uses a special camera that captures an image of your retinas and sends them to an ophthalmologist for review. 

It is recommended that all patients with diabetes have a retinal exam at least once per year to monitor for signs of early stage diabetic retinopathy – when treatment options are both effective and affordable.

If signs of diabetic retinopathy are identified, your physician will discuss next steps with you, including potential referral to an eye specialist, as needed.

A very small percentage (<1%) of patients may require use of a mild dilating drop to temporarily increase pupil size. If required, the mildest concentration drop is used for this exam, and the effect wears off quickly.
